A stunning giant outdoor mural will be a star attraction at this year’s West End Carnival, adding a new dimension to the popular annual event which takes place on Saturday August 29.
Renowned mural artist Spray Saint, real name Jordan Lauder, has been commissioned to paint the nature-based mural on the grey wall of an empty building at the entrance to the Colin Campbell Court car park in Market Avenue.
Spray Saint is one of the south west’s best known mural artists and examples of his work can be seen on buildings across Plymouth City Centre which is earning a growing reputation for its colourful street art.
Spray Saint will start work on the mural next week before adding the finishing touches in front of the carnival crowds.
Mike Vosper, from Plymouth’s Artists Together, has brought the project together in partnership with Plymouth City Council, the Plymouth City Centre Company, which organises the carnival, and LTC Powered Access Limited which provided a scissor lift free of charge.
Mike said:“ This is a unique opportunity for people to witness up close how these incredible artworks are created.”
Steve Hughes, chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company, said: “We are so pleased that Jordan has agreed to do this and we hope it attracts street art fans from across the south west. The West End is becoming increasingly vibrant and this amazing work of art will transform the street scene directly opposite the market.”
Plymouth’s Artists Together have also been working on brightening up hoardings across the West End in time for the carnival.
The Carnival starts at 11am on Saturday August 29 and takes place in the streets around Plymouth Market which are closed for the day to accommodate a packed programme of FREE entertainment and outdoor food and crafts stalls.
The main stage will be on Frankfort Gate but there will be entertainment across the West End and inside Plymouth Market, including live music, dance, Samba bands, circus performers and street food.
